Painting in a loose way can bring inspiring works to the fore as they are usually unfussy but also depict the subject matter in a simple way which can be so appealing to the eye. For example a tree does not have to have every branch and leaf painted to make a good painting!

Practice painting a simple scene in just 15 minutes using a limited palette. This way you have to concentrate on what is important and what can be omitted. Just use a soft pencil to draw the outline or you can use a brush with a neutral colour wash. Leave out the details and if you want people in it just hint at them with a few simple strokes. Fill in the main areas of colour and as soon as it dries sharpen the edges and paint some shadows.

This exercise will teach you to paint more freely and brings great satisfaction. Just enjoy the feel of painting in a relaxed way and you may surprise yourself with the result!!
